Resumo

Portuguese law gave women property rights in marriage and in inheritance. In colonial Brazil dowry was a social practice in propertied families and each daughter received an equal amount of money, salves, gold and silver, besides jewelry and a trousseau. Women administered their property when they were widows, when they remained single and were of age, and during their husbands’ absence. Those women who had illegitimate children made them their heirs.
